BUILDING WATOTO A PIECE AT A TIME

25 October 2010

Here at Watoto, we are very grateful for the fact that God gave each and every single one of us different gifts and talents. After all, stewarding a home for more than 2,000 precious children it means it’s imperative that we all pitch in and do our bit to make Watoto run smoothly and effectively. Some individuals are graphic designers, others are mothers, teachers, nurses, administrators, waste management personnel, pastors, drivers - all work collectively to rescue, raise and rebuild this Nation.

Gerry Kimpel, Team Leader of Watoto Fabrications was given the talent of being able to use his hands to make almost anything and everything. It is his role to supervise and guide the Watoto Fabrications unit in order to produce thousands of essential items we need to operate each year. On an average week one would see the 36 full time workers under his care manufacturing goods in metal, carpentry, tailoring and masonry.

The purpose of the self sustainable fabrication unit is to ensure that whatever Watoto requires for the homes, babies' homes and schools are manufactured in-house.

Gerry and his team work hard year round to meet these furnishing and outfitting requirements at each of our three villages. The team make products such as cabinets, couches, chairs, tables, dining room chairs, cupboards, drawers, coffee tables and bunk beds for the village homes. For the school, items like desks, chairs, pin boards, white boards, chalkboards, easels, drawing tables, stools and so forth are also made. Furthermore furniture and equipment is produced and provided for staff housing including kitchen cabinets, steps and railings. In addition all babies' homes cribs, uniforms, custom made specialty items, windows, doors and roofing are catered for.

Watoto Fabrications started in June 2005 with two workers and less than 5 vocational students. Today, there are 36 workers, of whom 8 are former vocational students. Best of all, because the production unit is thriving under Gerry’s leadership and time management skills, we are now able to start producing these products for external sale.
