NEW ARRIVALS AT BABY WATOTO

23 May 2011

Between January and April 2011, we were thrilled to welcome 59 babies into the Watoto family through our Baby Watoto programme. By the end of April, 144 babies were being cared for at our three facilities in Kampala, Suubi and Gulu.

And lately, new babies are coming in at an increasing rate, with almost one baby each day. Many of the babies are premature, malnourished or with serious medical complications.

Here are some of their stories.

Newborn Boy E:  3 days old, was abandoned just after birth outside a local radio station

Newborn Girl S: Abandoned at a golf course shortly after her premature birth

Baby Boy I and Baby Girl R: 2-month-old twins, weighing 1.5 and 2 kgs

Toddler Boy I: Abandoned in a hospital about 5 hours from Kampala

Newborn Boy J: Found wrapped in a plastic bag in a bush and taken to a local hospital before coming to Baby Watoto

Baby Boy Z: Abandoned at 4 or 5 hours old

Baby Girl M: 36 hours old, mother was caught abandoning her under a tree

Toddler Boy J: Went to the market with his mom… “to buy sweets, but then mum let go of my hand and ran off, and I couldn’t catch her”

Baby Girl P:  2-months old, mom died during childbirth

Baby Boy D:  A sick and malnourished 3-month-old from Gulu whose mom committed suicide

Baby Boy I: 1-month old and very malnourished (dropped to 2.7kg from 3.8kg birth weight). Mom died when he was two weeks old from C-section complications

Toddler Boy E: Abandoned in Kampala

Baby Boy J and Girl B: Presumed to be twin siblings, about 9 or 10 months old. Baby B weighing only 2.7 kg and Baby J 6kg

Sadly, Baby B came to us too late. This photo was taken a few hours before she passed away. We take comfort in the fact that she is now in a better place and that she knew love in her last 48 hours on earth.

We currently have the space for all these new babies but we do not have enough sponsors to cover their care. Please help us find more sponsors for Baby Watoto so that we can continue to say, “… yes, we can take them” when the phone rings.

If you haven’t already sponsored Baby Watoto, go to Watoto Sponsorship programme today, or commit to getting a friend to do the same and bring a smile to the eager faces looking for a home right now. Help us spread the word by becoming a Watoto Ambassador today. Write to us at watotoambassador@watoto.com
